XO, Kitty’s second season may be just as gloriously chaotic as the first

Kitty Song Covey – the titular main character XO, Kitty AND the the messiest bisexual teen on Netflix – she’s back and I can’t wait to see what the hell she comes up with this season because the first season was incredibly over the top.

The show is technically a spinoff series Netflix’s To All the Boys film trilogybased on the young adult romance series by Jenny Han. However, compared to the more grounded To All the Boys films XO, Kitty is absolutely out of place – in the best way possible.

It’s a teen drama that takes every plot point to its most absurd extreme. It’s also remarkably innocent: nothing on screen goes beyond a slightly hot kiss, “female dog” and “ass” are the strongest swear words you’ll hear, and minors drink little or no drinking. In fact, the first season had an entire storyline about underage drinking in South Korea, which is absolutely prohibited. This extremely dramatic teen series is not about sex and drugs Euphoria; it’s like High School Musical: The Musical: The Seriesbut with plot more soap opera. Because the show doesn’t rely on the inherent shock value that comes with heavier subject matter, it has to pull out all the stops does happen on a larger scale and more dramatically than you probably would think. The result is a performance so dramatic that it turns silly. This is a good thing.

The first season began with Kitty (Anna Cathcart), the younger sister To all the boys host Lara Jean, follows in her late mother’s footsteps to an international school in Korea. She is determined to reconnect with her mother, but soon discovers a dark and tangled web in her mother’s past, which also involves the school principal and her strictest teacher. Kitty, who describes herself as someone who pursues what she wants without abandon, will stop at nothing to solve this mystery… including breaking into hospitals to steal CDs and prying into her teachers’ personal lives. It allows for the kind of insanity that teen shows were made for without bending over backwards to make excuses; Kitty is the same This the sooner you accept this, the more enjoyable the performance will be.

Kitty has one more reason to spend a year abroad at the Korean Independent School in Seoul (known as KISS because this show just loves being cute and mean): Her long-distance Korean boyfriend, Dae (Choi Min-young ), goes there. But when he arrives, he finds out that Dae is dating rich socialite Yuri (Gia Kim)! Gasp!

Regardless of the genre, love triangles are central elements of teen series, including: Gilmore Girls Down Riverdale. IN XO, KittyHowever, a simple love triangle evolves into a multi-headed, cruel love hydra with a million additional complications. Season 1 ended with Kitty’s romantic status up in the air, with wonderfully promising plot twists in Season 2: she realized she and sweet Dae were better off as friends, survived a camping trip by Yuri (of all people), AND in the finale, she received a declaration of love from an unexpected source. Not only does Kitty have to deal with the chaos in her already crazy dating life, but her options are now even wider since she has her heart set on girls.

The family plot and romantic entanglements don’t even let you see how much crazy drama is packed into the first season’s 10 half-hour episodes. Kitty is accidentally assigned to the boys’ dormitory. He hardly misses school. Each character has their own tormented family drama. And each character simply doesn’t know how to act like a decent human being, instead jumping to conclusions and carrying out the most bullshit plans. That makes it XO, Kitty a reliable source of endless entertaining drama – everything that can happen in a series will happen. No one is more guilty of this than Kitty, who is a certified wrecking ball.

When I watched season 1, I was a little amazed at how hyperbolic the show was, especially compared to original film series. But now that I’ve accepted that this is a high-octane ride that hits the gas from episode one and never lets up, I’m more prepared for Season 2. I can’t wait to hang in there and see what the hell Kitty gets herself into this time.
