Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), the vice president-elect, announced Thursday that he would resign his Senate seat early Friday.
Vance sent his resignation letter to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) on Thursday as he prepares for the next four years in the White House.
“As I prepare to assume my duties as Vice President of the United States, I want to express that it has been a great honor and privilege to serve the people of Ohio in the Senate these past two years,” Vance wrote in his letter letter to DeWine.
DeWine will appoint a replacement for Vance, who served just two years of his six-year term in the Senate. The appointed senator will hold Vance’s seat until a special election in 2026. Another election will then take place in 2028.
Vance issued a separate statement Thursday thanking Ohioans for “the privilege of representing you in the United States Senate.”
“When I was elected to this office, I promised to never forget where I came from, and I have made sure I keep that promise every day,” he continued.
“The American people have given President Trump an unquestionable mandate to put America first, both at home and abroad. Over the next four years, I will do everything I can to help President Trump implement his agenda. Together we will make America stronger, safer and more prosperous than ever before.”
Vance and President-elect Trump will take office on January 20, 2025.
