President-elect Trump told NBC News on Saturday that he is probably give TikTok a 90-day extension while his new government assesses the situation following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a federal ban.
“The 90-day extension is something that will most likely be done because it is appropriate. You know, it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully,” Trump said said in a phone call with “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker. “It’s a very big situation.”
He said he will “probably” announce a decision on Monday, when he is sworn in for a second term in the White House.
A 90 day extension is allowed as part of bipartisan bill passed by Congress last April, giving TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance 270 days to divest from the app or face a ban from U.S. app stores.
TikTok warned in a statement that it will “go dark” on Sunday unless President Biden intervenes. But the White House mentioned that statement a ‘stunt’, with the argument that the app does not have to do that take action before Trump is sworn in.
“We have seen TikTok’s most recent statement,” said press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wrote in a statement on Saturday. “It’s a stunt and we see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take action in the coming days before the Trump administration takes office on Monday.”
The president-elect said Friday he would consider the app’s future once he is officially in power. And so did the White House said at the time that the TikTok ban will fall into the hands of the Trump administration.
