Liverpool Head coach Arne Slot has said that the club has put a lot of “effort” Mohamed Salah’s contract expand But admitted that he has been confident for some time negotiations in the ‘right direction’.
Salah would walk out of the contract this summer, but Liverpool confirmed the Egypt International has now extended its stay on Merseyside until the summer of 2027.
Discussions have been taking place for several months, in which sports director Richard Hughes supervises negotiations with Salah’s Agent, Ramy Abbas Issa.
“Of course I am happy,” said Slot. “He has now shown for so many years in a row in this club how much value he has for the team and for the club. We are very happy that he has expanded another two years and hopefully he can show on Sunday [against West Ham United] How important he has been for us all season.
‘Relief? I think so for the fans. It is no surprise for you, I knew a little better how the contract situation went throughout the season.
“Perhaps for the fans it was a pleasant surprise. I knew what longer things went in the right direction.
“It is a big compliment for Richard Hughes because Mo Salah, as a free agent, can go to every club he wants. But he stayed in our club and that is also a compliment for Richard.”
About the role he played in keeping Salah in Liverpool, Slot added: “I am part of that process, but I don’t think I will earn the compliments. In the first place I think of the choice of MO and the choice of his agent what he wants. Secondly, the club – FSG, Richard, Michael Edwards in him.
“Effort mainly means money! But not only money. What it can also tell you is that it is not only a good season this season. We also want to make a very good season next season and I think Mo is convinced that we have a reasonably good chance of doing this.”
