Colors inside is a heartfelt coming-of-age story for the whole family that combines fun and catchy songs, beautiful pastel colors and a touching story about the first steps we take on the way to ourselves. Totsuko is a gentle young woman with a form of synesthesia that allows her to see the “colors” of people. When she is attracted to the color of Kimi, a former high school student who suddenly drops out of Catholic school, they form a group with Rui, a boy who hides his passion for music from his family. As the three bond over music, will they begin to discover who they really are – what their true ‘color’ is?

Naoko Yamada one of the most famous directors working in anime todaywidely recognized for her ability to create emotionally authentic characters and a directorial eye that combines the sensuality of animation and live-action cinema. Yamada previously directed the award-winning A quiet voicewhich is widely considered to be one of the best anime films of recent times. Her other popular works include character drama Liz and the blue birdfavorite TV series K-On!and a historical fantasy series Heike’s story.

Colors inside marks Yamada’s long-awaited first feature film at Science SARU (Scott Pilgrim takes off, You-O), and sees her reuniting with regular employees screenwriter Reiko Yoshida (A quiet voice) and composer Kensuke Ushio (A man with a chainsaw, AND AND AND) to create a charming and sweet film with surprising emotional depth.

Colors inside It had its world premiere at the Annecy International Film Festival and was selected for the BFI London Film Festival. The film won the Golden Goblet Award for Best Animated Film at the 2024 Shanghai International Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the 7th Animation is Film Festival.

Synopsis:

Totsuko is a high school student who can see the “colors” of others. The colors of bliss, excitement and peace, and the color she cherishes as her favorite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, exudes the most beautiful color of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, quiet music enthusiasts whom they meet in a secondhand shop in a far corner of town. As they practice in an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, creating friendship and affection. Will they reveal their true “colors”?

COLORS IN THE MIDDLE is out in theaters in Japanese with English subtitles and English dubbing from Friday, January 31.
