Leeds resisted an exciting comeback from Buren Wakefield to achieve a dramatic 22-18 Betfred Super League victory in Headingley.

Two second half attempts by Max Jowitt saw the visitors threaten to withdraw a 16-point half-time shortage and the last Hooter came as a welcome relief for the men of Brad Arthur.

Fourteen’s first half of Jake Connor’s points seemed to have the Rhinos at home and dry during the rest before the loss of Lachlan Miller almost cost them. Leeds lost their shape and almost the match, while Wakefield stacked the pressure on the moaning defense of the hosts while the seconds ticked.

The last Hooter confirmed a fourth consecutive victory that goes back to third place in the table, and a suitable final for the annual MND awareness game of the Rhinos in honor of Rob Burrow, who died this week a year ago.

How Leeds maintained the home victory

There was little sign of the unrest to get into a routine first half, which leeded the score within 10 minutes when Connor opened a cute one down and Harry Newman pronounced Jowitt before he fell over the line.

But the departure of the Manking Miller made sure that Leeds lost shape and Wakefield kept the game alive 50 minutes when Jowitt ran at the end of his own bent kick before his second conversion reduced the deficit to 22-12.

Jowitt scored again just past the hour, burst free from a neat inner card from Corey Hall and then corresponded to Connor’s 14-point trek with the men of Daryl Powell within four.

The cause of Leeds was not helped two minutes after the increasing pressure from Wakefield, James Bentley was at sin for a high tackle on Wakefield second row Jay Pitts.

With Leeds who clearly looked at their leisure, Wakefield stacked on the pressure, Pepping Connor with high balls of Mason Lino’s boot, but the hosts survived just about to extend their winning run.
