James Stavridis, The former NATO supreme allied commander said he didn’t think President-elect Trump’s comments on Greenland were “crazy.”
“It’s not a crazy idea. … We could do a lot in terms of business and investment, exclude the Russians and the Chinese and work very closely with Greenland,” he told the radio host Johannes Catsimatidis in a Sunday interview on “The Cats Roundtable” on WABC 770 AM.
Stavridis said he considers Greenland to be a “strategic gold mine for the United States,” expressing support for Trump’s idea.
“It’s right at the top of the North Atlantic. It protects the approaches to our own country…It is very important geographically. It is full of strategic minerals, rare earths and probably a lot of gold. It has a lot of natural resources,” he said earlier in the interview.
“It doesn’t necessarily have to be the 51st state, but it can definitely be an economic goal for us,” he added.
“I think that’s how it goes… The Prime Minister of Greenland said, ‘We’re not for sale.’ But we are open for business.’ I think we should take him at his word.”
Trump expressed ambition last week for the US to acquire Greenland, the world’s largest island. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede Friday said that “Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We don’t want to be Danes, we don’t want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlandic.”
Egede also said he was “ready” to talk to Trump.
