South Park Retcons is a major plot hole with a surprise Thanksgiving return

South Park brought back a surprise character with their latest Thanksgiving special, and along with it, resurrected a plot hole that’s been around for the past few years. South Park is coming to an end with the 28th season of the animated series, and celebrated the holiday season with his first Thanksgiving episode in 12 long years. But as the animated series continues to make changes to its status quo and set up more for the future, the show will also take some time to wrap up some of the questions that have been raised over the past few years.

South Park not a stranger killing off characters and bringing them back decades laterand it has already happened several times this year. The latest episode of Season 28 officially brings Ned Herblanski back to the show for the first time in real time since he was seen during Season 22’s “Bike Parade,” and it actually reprises some of his previous appearances we’ve seen since. Confirming that he is indeed still completely traumatized, this definitely answers the questions fans have had about Ned’s condition.

South Park confirms that Ned is still injured

South Park Season 28, Episode 4, “Turkey Trot” reveals that Saudi Arabia sponsors an annual urban Turkish Trot, and people from all over the city participate to win a cash prize. Two of these members are Jimbo and Nedwhose reappearance in the series confirms that he is still very injured after being attacked by ManBearPig. Ned was affected by global warming in season 22’s “Time to Get the Cereal” and was later revealed to be injured and in a wheelchair at the end of his next appearance in “Bicycle Parade” later that season.

But interestingly enough, Ned was also found to be perfectly fine in later years. He was spotted in the crowd celebrating with the rest of the city South ParQ Special vaccinationand even front and center during the season 26 episode “Japanese Toilet.” In both of these appearances, Ned appeared as he did before, without all the scars and injuries he sustained during the mauling. So, with his return in Season 28, not only did he confirm that he’s healing more from his injuries, but he got a completely new character design as a result.

South Park is not afraid of retconners

South Park do not be afraid of repeated communication long-term development or changing the status quo to save the animated series constantly in step with the modern world. We’ve seen a lot of these changes this year alone, as the show’s characters have undergone a number of notable changes since the full introduction of United States President Donald Trump, as there are now questions about how people like Randy Marsh will move forward in the future.

This flexibility is one thing fans love loved about South Park after all this timeand it even still adheres to any long-established canon. The show is willing to repeat things (like this, which is probably just an animation error, only using Ned as a placeholder in background shots) that don’t make sense, or even just ignore them entirely. Whatever happened would have been funnier or better for the story, and that’s only a good sign for the future.
