Dunedin-Max Scherzer had a solid spring training debut for Toronto when the Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Tuesday.
Scherzer started the game and eliminated four of the six batters with whom he was confronted.
He gave up the opening run of the cardinals in the first inning after surrendering a triple to Victor Scott II, who later scored on an Alec Burleson offering.
Earlier this month, Toronto acquired the 40-year-old Scherzer, a triple Cy Young Award winner. The eight-time All-Star signed a one-year-old contract, US $ 15.5 million with Toronto in free agency.
