Between the new Urban hunter movie on Netflix and upcoming Cat’s eye anime adaptation, it’s been a big couple of years for fans of Tsukasa Hojo. His two biggest series have always been popular, but lately they’ve been getting more attention than ever. So it’s the perfect time to go back to the manga that started it all…and next month it’s easier than ever!

Abrams Books is preparing to release omnibus editions of both series through its Kana imprintcollecting 1-3 volumes of each into one collection book. We got a chance to review both manga a month early. And we can confirm: these two volumes are absolutely necessary for fans.

If you’re new to Tsukasa Hojo’s work, just know this Cat’s eye and Urban hunter are two of the biggest titles in manga and anime history. They lasted from 1981-1985 and 1985-1991, respectively, creating a single worldview of cleaners, murderers and thieves. Both series have been screened and adapted around the world, and both have returned to the spotlight in recent months.

The last ones Netflix Urban hunter film tells the origin story of sex-crazed marksman Ryo and his partner Kaori. (This is also not the only film version in recent years, since 2018 Niki Larson and the scent of cupid showing surprisingly accurate adaptation.) And next month Cat’s eye is being rethought with a new Disney+ exclusive anime adaptation. This one promises to stick more closely to the original manga, bringing the self-proclaimed gentleman thief Rat back to adventure.

This one is heavy new edition Cat’s eye packages in the first three volumes of the manga, consisting of 23 chapters. This is more than enough to introduce new readers to the main story of sisters Hitomi, Rui, and Ai. The three run the Cat’s Eye Cafe by day and work together as the mysterious thief Cat’s Eye at night. And Toshio, Hitomi’s detective boyfriend, is none the wiser! By the end of this collection, we’ll be scratching the surface of their true mission, as well as their father’s identity and mysterious disappearance.

The translation for this new edition is excellent, as is the printing itself. The full-color pages are reproduced on glossy paper, and there are 48 pages of 2-color inserts. The paperback also has a gorgeous dust jacket. It’s a beautiful book both inside and out, and its huge size makes it comfortable to sit and read and easy on the eyes.

The the first volume of Art Urban hunter omnibus follows suit with a full-color dust jacket and six pages of full-color inserts on glossy paper. This, again, collects the first three volumes of the original run of 25 chapters. Readers are waiting to meet Ryo Saeba and his partner Makimura… however, the latter is not long in this world. We soon meet Makimura’s sister Kaori, Ryo’s new partner who was a caravan but cute. Together, they answer calls for help on the Shinjuku Station message board.

This action-packed series includes several interesting plots. Hojo includes commentary on the making of the series between chapters. There is also an interview at the end that talks about how the first few chapters of the manga came to be. And at the end there are notes on the translation, including an explanation of the meaning mokkori Like the first volume Cat’s eyeit is a must for collectors; but it also contains a lot of information for curious fans.
