Viktor HOVOLAND was stable in the midst of a wild Saturday of charges and collapsed on the Valspar Championship, so that he had a tie in a three -way man in Innisbrook with two dozen players who are still very much in the mix.
Jacob Bridgeman showed a lot of courage in his first time as the 36-hole leader, who fell four shots behind him and gather for a one-under 70 to share the lead with HOVOLAND (69) and Nico Echavarria (66).
They were at seven with apparently everyone on their heels. That includes Justin Thomas, who left on Friday hopeful that he would cut. He shot 30 on the rear nine for a 65, his lowest round ever on the Copperhead track in Innisbrook, to finish two.
Jordan Spieth was entertaining as always, twice make a deep in the forest, and together with missing a few short par putts and having to settle for a 67.
He was still only four shots behind a Sunday in which 23 players were separated by four shots.
Byeong their An was the only player who reached nine-under with a birdie on the 11th hole, only to make five bogeys over the last seven holes for a 72.
“It’s nice to be in battle, but it’s a bit more stressful if you don’t feel super comfortable about the ball,” said HOVOLAND. “But man, it’s nice to see how some putts go inside and still see the ball end close to the hole and have done some good scores there.”
Echavarria, who won last fall in Japan for his second PGA Tour title, finished well before the last groups and played Bogey-free for his 66, remarkable Birdie making on all three of the par 3s on the rear nine.
“This is a golf course where you don’t have to be in the lead and get the leaders,” he said. “We have seen that it is a hard golf course. You have to drive your ball very well here. You have to touch the greens. It’s hard to get around the greens. So we’ll get the chance to have a good round tomorrow.”
Ricky Castillo enjoyed a 68 and was a shot behind. Thomas and Shane Lowry (70) were among the five players on five-under, with one and Billy Horschel (69) in the large group behind a shot. Lucas Glover (69) was part of the group with Spieth on four behind.
“The leaderboard is stacked. There are probably 25 boys – 30 boys maybe – that can still win this golf tournament,” said Jeremy Paul van Germany, who shot 70 and was two shots in the group. “Trying to put together a good round and see where it places me.”
