New York’s proposal would forbid the police to stop traffic for small violations to pursue ‘racial equity’

An account that makes its way through the Legislative power of the state of New York Would forbid the police to carry out traffic stops for minor violations in an attempt to limit unnecessary stops and further “racial equity and public safety”.

The proposal would hinder officers to cross people or to look for various traffic violations, including having a rear light, expired vehicle registration tags, too much window tint or if the scent of marijuana is detected.

In certain cases, evidence that is collected can be excluded in violation of the bill before the court.

The measure is intended to “limit the frequency of traffic stops for small violations to promote racial equity and public safety”, according to the account, since racial minorities in the state form the most arrests and traffic stops.

In Nassau County alone, the inhabitants of Black and Latino represent 61% of the arrests, 50% of traffic stops, 60% of field interviews and 69% of PAT-downs, despite making less than 30% of the province population, police data shows.

White drivers receive an average of 1.3 tickets per stop compared to two tickets for black drivers and 2.1 for Latino drivers, the data shows.

“They say that the roads are so bad in Nassau County. Well, you would just remove another tool from us that these bad drivers will take off the road,” he told reporters. “Stop the handcuffs of the criminals and put them on our men and women in law enforcement.”

The public prosecutor of the province, Anne Donnelly, said that the proposal “The most ridiculous is that I have seen in my 36 years in law enforcement.”
