Nasa flights study cosmic ray effects for air, future space passengers

Recent aircraft scientific flights to Greenland improve NASA -Understanding space time by measuring exposure to air passengers and confirm global radiation tickets used in flight trail planning. These unique data also have a value outside the Earth as the celestial plan of the road to use the same instrument to monitor the radiation level for passengers entering Mars atmosphere and for the upcoming Lunar survey.

The Space Weather Weather Weather Aviation (SWXRAD) aircraft flight was held from August 25 to August 28 and conducted two five -hour flight in Nuuk, Greenland. Violence from NASA’s Landley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, the mission has collected measuring dosimetry or the level of radiation dose, to make air passengers from cosmic radiation. Cosmic radiation is caused by high -energy particles from space that originates from our sun during eruptive events such as solar flashes and from events further, such as Supernov in our galaxy of the Milky Way and beyond.

“Since NASA spacecraft and astronauts explore the moon, Mars and beyond, we support critical research to understand – and ultimately foresee – the influences of the space time in the solar system,” said Jamie Favors, Director of NASA’s space time program at NASA -EU Washington headquarters. “Although this project is focused on airline apps on Earth, Nairas could be part of the next generation of tools that support the artemis of the mission on the moon and at the end of the human mission on Mars.”

Nasa -in the present of airline ionizing radiation, or NairaIs the modeling system improved SWXRAD Airborne Science flights. The model contains global dangerous radiation maps in real time in the atmosphere and creates predictions of exposure to aircraft and spaceships.

“Exposure to radiation is maximally in the poles and minimal on the equator due to the effect of the Earth’s magnetic field. In polar regions, the magnetic field lines are aimed at or outside the country, so there is no elimination or armchair in the radiation fields you see anywhere else.” Explained Chris Mertens, the main explorer of SWXRAD NASA LAGLEY. “Greenland is a region in which the protection of cosmic radiation on Earth’s magnetic field is zero.”

This means that flight crews and passengers are on the USA’s polar flights from USA Asia or from the USA Europe exposed to higher radiation levels.

The data collected at Greenland will be compared to Nairus modeling, which calculates the calculation on the sources around the world, which include neutron monitors and instruments that measures the parameters of the solar wind and the magnetic field, along with information on instruments such as the Noa Going Series of the Satellite.

“If the new data disagree, we have to come back and look at why it is,” Mertens said. “In the surroundings of radiation, one of the greatest uncertainty is the effect of the magnetic field of the Earth. So this mission eliminates this variable in the model and allows us to concentrate on other areas, such as the characterization of particles coming from space to the atmosphere, and then transportation and interaction with the atmosphere.”

The SWXRAD SCIENCE team flew to the B200 King Air with five researchers and crew members. In the coming months, these will focus on the quality of measurement data, quantitative comparison of modeling and a validation study between the current Nairas data and new aircraft dosmeter measurements.

All this information is trying to protect pilots and passengers on Earth from health risks associated with radiation exposure, using existing NASA scientific capabilities to safely bring astronauts to the moon and Mars.

“Once you get to Mars and even the transition to Mars, there would be a time in which we have no data sets to really understand what the environment is,” Favors said. “So, we start thinking not only about how we prepare for those people on Mars, but also what information we need to bring with ourselves? So, we bring this information to models just like Nair.

The SWXRAD flight mission is funded through the NASA Directorate for Heliophysics of the Scientific Mission Administration. NASA -in Office of the Space Time Program The host is Nasa Lyley and facilitates researchers in creating new tools for predicting space time and to understand the space influences on Earth’s infrastructure, technology and society.
