Portugal smells in mourning after 16 people died and about 20 were injured when the famous Glória Funicular Cable Railway of Lisbon derailed on Wednesday evening.
Among the dead are seven men and eight women, said Margarida Castro Martins, head of Lisbon’s Civil Protection Agency.
Five of the killed were Portuguese together with three British, two South Koreans, two Canadians, an American, a Ukrainian, a Swiss and a French national, the police say.
The police have not yet confirmed the identities of those who died, but some are called elsewhere. This is what we know about them.

André Jorge Gonçalves Marques (Facebook)The death of Mr. Marques, who worked as the brake guard on the cable car, was reported by the Portuguese transport association Sitra.
“We send our participation to the families and friends of the victims of the accident and wish them a quick recovery and the best recovery for the others who were injured in the accident,” wrote the trade union on Facebook.
He was a “dedicated, friendly and happy professional, always willing to contribute to the greater good”, according to his employer Carris, who runs the cable car.
Vladimiro Santos, Mr. Marques’ childhood friend, told the Portuguese newspaper morning Morning Post that he grew up in the village of Sarnads of St. Simão in Central Portugal, moves to Lisbon as a young man.
Mr. Marques leaves a woman and two children, the newspaper reported.
Pedro Manuel Alves Trindade
Portuguese Volleyball FederationThe former volleyball referee was mentioned by the Portuguese volleyball federation as a victim of the crash, who said it was “deeply saddened by the tragedy”.
Mr. Trindade, it said, had served as the leader of the Lisbon Volleyball Association and was a referee for it.
He had worked for the Santa Casa Da Misericórdia organization, the biggest charity in Portugal.
In total, four employees of Santa Casa Da Misericórdia died in the crash, while two others stayed in the hospital from Friday.
Mr. Trindade also worked in the village of Estoril – about 24 km (14 miles) from Lisbon – as a guest professor at a higher education institute specialized in hospitality and tourism.
Kayleigh Smith and Will Nelson
Theater director Kayleigh Smith and her partner Will Nelson have been appointed as British victims in the Funiculcrash of Lisbon.
Mads Theater in Macclesfield placed a tribute on Friday evening and acknowledged their death in the tragedy and wrote that Mrs. Smith “was a dear friend of many and will be missed enormously”.
On the morning of the crash, Mrs. Smith had posted a series of photos of their journey to the Portuguese capital on social media.
The British Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that “the families supported the three British nationals who died” and was in contact with the local authorities.
A third British victim still has to be mentioned.
Other employees of Santa Claus Casa Da Misericórdia
The other employees of Santa Casa Da Misericórdia who were murdered are mentioned in the Portuguese media.
Alda Matias worked at the Strategic Planning Department next to Mr Trindade, Sandra Coelho worked in the cultural department, and Ana Paula Lopez Was linked to youth and youth projects, colleagues told the BBC.
An employee, Valdemar Bastos, said the BBC that the staff had often used the cable car, together with tourists and the elderly, instead of walking up the steep hill.
In a statement to the staff, Paulo Sousa, the Ombudsman of the charity, said: “It is in shock that we are all ourselves. We lost colleagues, friends, people with whom we shared our daily lives and our mission.”
Nine other dead
Details are still forward from the other victims.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed for the BBC Ukrainian service that a 54-year-old Ukrainian man belonged to the dead.
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed his ‘great sadness’ after the death of a French woman.

On Thursday, Alvaro Santos Almeida, head of Portugal’s Health Service, said that 23 people were injured. Six of them were in the intensive care and three had sustained small wounds.
Three of those wounded are Portuguese, one is German, one is South Korean, one is Swissers, one is Cape Verdean and one is Moroccan.
Spanish, Israeli, Brazilian, Italian and French subjects were also involved, he added.
A German family of three was also on board the cable car when it cried, the local media report.
Portuguese News Outlet Observador reported earlier that the father had been killed, but the police clarified on Friday that a German citizen who was called one of the dead was discovered alive in the hospital.
The mother would be in a critical condition in the hospital and a three -year -old boy suffered minor injuries.
