LG’s new UltraFine 6K monitor looks like Apple’s Pro Display XDR – but better

This week at CES 2025LG introduced its new UltraFine 6K Display, a professional monitor that is similar to Apple’s Pro Display XDR but offers some advantages.

First of all, the LG UltraFine is the first 6K monitor to use Thunderbolt 5 ports. Apple integrated the new connectivity standard into the last year M4 MacBook Pro And Mac minibut its Pro Display XDR is at least over five years old and limited to Thunderbolt 3.

What does this mean for performance? Thunderbolt 5 has twice the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4, meaning it can easily support 80Gbps. Using Intel Bandwidth Boost mode, Thunderbolt 5 should be able to reach up to 120Hz on a 6K display. But we’ll have to wait and test the LG in the lab to confirm that.

Another advantage is almost certainly that the UltraFine 6K doesn’t cost up to $6,000 like the Pro XDR. Unfortunately, LG hasn’t released pricing details for its new monitor yet, saving some other specs for future announcements (like maximum refresh rate and availability). Given that other 6K monitors cost $2,500 to $3,000, we can expect a similar price range.

What we do know is that the display is not an OLED or Mini-LED monitor, which should also reduce some costs. Instead, the UltraFine 6K features a “Nano IPS Black” panel, which LG claims offers “exceptional color accuracy and high contrast with a wide color gamut that covers 99.5% of Adobe RGB and 98% of DCI-P3.”

The previous version of an LG UltraFine monitor was the 4K display (24MD4KL-B), which also launched over five years ago. Compared to its predecessor, the UltraFine 6K has adopted a slimmer, more Apple-like design, including a nearly invisible bezel. With the model name 32U990A and based on older LG model numbers, we can only conclude that it is a 32-inch display.

Stay tuned for more details and a comprehensive review once we get our hands on a model to test.
