Jennifer Dixon, Chief Executive of the Health Foundation, said: “This report is a health check that we cannot afford to ignore – and the diagnosis is dark.
“Great Britain becomes the sick person of the wealthy world, especially for people of working age. While other nations progresses, we were standing for standstill – and in some areas it slipped back poorly.”
Dixon pointed out that the improvement of the mortality rates in Great Britain has slowed down significantly since 1990 in the 2010s, with the coalition government’s austerity policy being pursued an essential factor after 2010. Smoking, alcohol abuse and poor nutrition also help to explain the increasingly sick population of Britain.
By 2023, women in Great Britain had a 14% higher mortality rate than the median in the other countries, while it was 9% in men of all ages.

“This is shocking because most mortality between 25 and 49 years are in principle avoidable.”
The figures for national statistics show that 5,448 people in 2023 died in the consequences of drug poisoning in England and Wales – 11% in the previous year and the highest number since the beginning of the records in 1993. A spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs said: “Every death from drug abuse is a tragedy. This government is committed to reducing death in connection with drugs and the support of more people to recover for a healthier, longer life.
