YYou have one of that inspiring quotation calendars, right? “Says teen Alzheimer’s Carer Chloé (Eloise Smyth) in her therapy session.” No, I have three, “answers her counselor. That approximately summarizes this well-meaning but unfortunate Sub-Hallmark comedy-drama-Wiens attempts to live with Humor’s Life on every cliché-blanket.

Chloé is your typical Feckless Sixth-former, busy with her mother Eileen (Elizabeth Berrington) and Bunking her swimming training. After her grandmother -pin (former Dynasty -actor Stephanie Becham) forgets the chicken one day to put in the oven and takes Eileen to her own house, the young person is set up as a spontaneous caregiver. There is a certain complicity between Chloé and her different spunky grandparent; Because they want to defy the diagnosis, they prepare a “fuck-it list” of things to do. But hard biological realities reduce it briefly.

The awkward attempts to Levity – such as PEG Razzing around her new mobility scooter – can be bearable if she and her illness were sharply detailed. But Beceak has little to understand, in terms of the deeper past and the personality of her character. And there is an alarming void – apart from a manufactured panic while she goes AWOL on a pier – where a report of her decline should be. With PEG already made passive because of her perilous situation, the script of Elizabeth HRIB doubles by increasingly limiting her to a comic foil. When Chloé has a threatening snog with a fellow support group Regular (Harry Kirton), there is her nan to destroy it by turning Rockin ‘Robin.

This condensation also extends to other characters, including the father of Chloé – whose only goal is to lean around doors – as well as Eileen. Reducing her to a pill-hugging Harangeler and emotionally Incontinent undermines the plea of Gray Matter for empathy while the film switches to the caregiver in the second half. The barrage of Bleery Montaged clichés does the rest. It is probably possible to make a feel -good Alzheimer’s film, but this lacks the goal with a mile.

Gray Matter is available on digital platforms from 10 March.
