First NASA Neurodiversity Network intern to present at American Geophysical Union annual conference
NASA’s Science Activation Program NASA Neurodiversity Network (N3) sponsors a summer internship program for high school students, in which learners on the autism spectrum are paired with subject matter experts from NASA. N3 intern Lillian Hall and mentor Dr. Juan Carlos Martinez Oliveros presented Lilly’s summer research project on December 9 at American Geophysical Union Conference 2024 in Washington, D.C. Their poster, titled “Eclipse Megamovie: Image Processing,” represents the first time an N3 intern has co-authored a presentation at the prestigious AGU conference.
The NASA Citizen Science project, Eclipse Megamovieharnesses the power of citizen science to construct a high-resolution time-lapse of the solar corona during the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024. By coordinating the work of hundreds of participants on the path to totality, a substantial set of images have been obtained. The goal of the project is to reveal dynamic transformations of the solar atmosphere that are only visible during a total solar eclipse.
To process the large amount of imaging data collected, Lilly helped Dr. Martinez Oliveros and other researchers implement a robust pipeline involving image calibration, registration, and collocation. Image recording techniques aligned solar features across different images, compensating for Earth’s rotation and camera movement. Finally, they used imaging techniques to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, revealing subtle coronal structures and possible dynamics. This comprehensive data processing methodology made it possible to extract meaningful scientific information from the Eclipse Megamovie dataset.
Here’s what Lilly had to say: “Working with N3 has given me the opportunity to use my neurodiverse perspective to impact NASA research. Through the process of my project and the opportunity to share it at the American Geophysical Union conference, I am very grateful to have found my place in the field of planetary science in which I dream of continuing my research at the future.
