MPs voted to support the bill of football and to set up an independent regulator to supervise the men’s competition in the top five divisions of England.
They voted with 415 to 98 to pass the bill at the third reading in the Lower House, and it is now ready to become a law.
The legislation will grant powers to a body that is independent of the government and football authorities.
The government has previously said that an independent regulator will protect “football clubs” by “guaranteeing their financial sustainability”.
“I am proud to be part of the winning team that has put our fans back on the field in the heart of the game, where they belong,” said culture secretary Lisa Nandy.
The bill was initially introduced in March 2024 by the then conservative government, but failed to pass in parliament before a general election was called in in May. The new Labor government re -introduced the bill in July 2024.
In a message to fans before the mood, Nandy had told the commons: “We do this for you because you have been treated for too long as a side issue or in the worst case a nuisance in a game that is only great because of you.
“This is for Macclesfield, for Wigan, for Bury, for Bolton, for Derby, for reading, for Sheffield Wednesday, for Morecambe and for many, much more who had to endure the misery to be placed last when they had to be placed first.”
Shadow Minister of Sport, Louie French MP, criticized the bill and said: “A future conservative government will activate an assessment of Labor’s regulator as soon as possible”.
Fair Campaign Fair game from Football Campaign described the bill that cleaned up the commons as “a historic step forward for our national competition.”
“This is a victory for fairness, sustainability and the future of football … Now we are finally on our way to a fairer future for football,” said it.
