From 1947 the interest group used a clock to symbolize potential and even probability that people do something to put an end to humanity. After the end of the Cold War it was so close to 17 minutes to midnight. In recent years, to tackle rapid worldwide changes, the group has changed from draining the minutes until midnight to counting the seconds.

The group said that the clock could be reversed if leaders and countries worked together to tackle existential risks.
