Carney is looking for partnerships with ‘like -minded’ countries in exchange for this UK Visit – National

Prime minister Mark Carney is in London for meetings with the leaders of the United KingdomAustralia, Spain and Iceland to discuss trade and safety.

Carney was planned to meet the Danish Prime Minister on Friday, but that meeting was canceled.

Four drones flew over Danish airports on Wednesday evening to Thursday morning and brought concern about security from that context with recent Russian raids in the airspace of NATO countries.

Carney participated on Friday in a panel discussion on the Global Progress Action Summit with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir van Iceland.

The panel focused on how the center of the Left political parties can compete with growing right -wing populism.

Carney said that “like -minded” countries should work together against the economic and geopolitical “break” driven by the tarief agenda of US President Donald Trump.

“We learned the lesson that we have to be … Masters should be in our own house. We can’t religate for too long on one trading partner. We can tackle it by building and too diversify at home,” Carney said.

“We must be sure that with like -minded trading partners around the world. That is not everyone in the world, but countries that share our values, a shared dedication to open markets.”

High government officials who spoke in the background described the journey as an opportunity for face-time with world leaders to strengthen trade, business and security partnerships, while Canada tries to reduce its dependence on the United States.

This is Carney’s fourth meeting with Starmer since picking up. It is the first time that the Prime Minister has personally met the Australian, Icelandic and Spanish leaders.

This last international journey comes after the recent Visits by Carney to Mexico City and the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, and after he had organized the leaders of Indonesia and Ireland in Ottawa before his departure.

The conservatives have criticized Carney’s recent international journeys and say that they have not yielded any concrete results for Canada.

The High Commissioner of Canada of the British Ralph Goodale said these meetings lay the foundation for closer economic and security tires.

“It was extremely important for them to talk Face -To -Face, and from those who give their respective civil servants instructions on how they want to see progress in certain areas made by the end of this year,” said Goodale.

“Part of it can be done electronically, but … who have two prime ministers physically in the same room and talk directly to each other is an extremely important thing.”

During their meeting, Carney and Starmer Canada discussed the UK and became a member of the extensive and progressive agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement that is mainly involved with Pacific Nations.

On Monday in New York, Carney noted that Canada is one of the founders of the CPTPP and had a free trade agreement with the European Union.

Some have suggested that the EU could join the CPTPP – which would offer large global markets a way to limit the damage of mandatory Chinese and American trade policy. Others say that the EU can simply agree to act more with CPTPP countries.

Carney said on Monday that Canada is part of these discussions, but “they are still early days.”

Asia Pacific Foundation Vice-President Vina Nadjibulla said that every conversation about trade cooperation is good news.

“This is great for Canada, because it shows that we are able to bring our Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic partners together,” she said.

Canada and the UK still don’t have a bilateral trade agreement. The two countries use an interim deal from April 2021, when the UK left the European Union.

A year later, both countries launched conversations about a permanent deal, but London suspended the negotiations in January 2024. The two countries have since had an impasse, in which Great Britain blocks hormone treated beef from Canada and British farmers who call for more cheese exports to Canada.

“We will want to see some progress in those issues, so that our producers have access to the British market on the same footing as access to access to the British producers to the Canadian market,” Goodale said.

Goodale said he believes that there is a “landing zone” for renewed trade interviews and noted that the vast majority of trade between the two countries is tariff -free.

Carney and Starmer also discussed their recent recognition of the Palestinian State, the continuous conflict in the middle and the war in Ukraine.

Nadjibulla said that Canada, the VK and Australia want a deeper collaboration in response to the instability that comes from Washington.

Australia, for example, tries to get clarity from the US about the future of her Aukus Security Partnership with London and Washington, she said.

“Canada has this unique geography, is in the middle of these two theaters, and we can be that bridge between democracies and allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific and in the Euro-Atlantic Ocean, both on the security and defenses (s) also on the economic side,” she said.

Canada, the VK, Australia, New Zealand and the US are allies in the Five Eyes Intelligence-Sharing Partnership.

While Carney and Starmer concentrated in areas of agreement, they strongly disagreed with one subject: ladies rugby.

The two leaders presented each other at the Jerseys for the national teams of their countries, which will come to the Women’s Rugby World Cup in the World Cup World Cup on Saturday.
