Canadian amusement park threatens to eutanize 30 Beluga whales

A Canadian amusement park threatens 30 Beluga -Walvissen in Eutory after the government blocked its request to send them to China.

Marineland in Ontario had hoped to discharge the cetaceans to a theme park in Zhuhai, after years of concerns about animal welfare and financial misery.

But their transfer was denied by the Canadian government last week for concern that they would be confronted in the same way as a substandard treatment as “public entertainment”.

Then the OM asked federal financing to keep taking care of the animals – but this was refused and was “inappropriate” by the fishing minister Joanne Thompson.

In the absence of financing because it ends the activities, Marineland has now said that it might have to sleep, according to the New York Times and CBC News.

It is said that this was “a direct consequence of the minister’s decision”.

The park told the ministers last week that it was in a “critical financial state” and was unable to provide sufficient care for the whales, because it was closed in the summer while it still removed the animals.

But Thompson said that the lack of a feasible alternative from Marineland for the Belugas did not entail the Canadian government, the bill should pay for their care.

Marineland had hoped to send the Belugas to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai, who is in China between Hong Kong and Macau.

Thompson denied his export permit and said that the strengthening of fishing legislation in 2019 that made it illegal to use whales and dolphins for entertainment forbade the move.

“I could not approve an export in good conscience that would perpetuate the treatment that these Belugas have endured,” she said.

“To approve the request, a constant life in captivity and a return to public entertainment would have meant.”

Criticism of Marineland started in 2020, when animal welfare services opened an investigation into the park.

It discovered that 12 whales in the park had died for a period of two years and all the marine life of the park stated to be under suffering.

In November, a fifth Beluga died in a year, with the total number of deceased whales being taken to 20 since 2019, according to the Canadian Press news agency.

When visitors to the park started to fall, Marineland became entangled in the financial crisis, it won a profession in February to collect his own country and raise money to move animals while looking for a new buyer and this summer closed its doors.

Campaigners of animal welfare have spoken out indignation about the behavior of Marineland and the possibility that the whales can be killed.

Camille Labchuk, executive director of the Canadian animal rights group Animal Justice, said that Marineland “had a moral obligation to finance the future care for this animal”, and added that threats to the animals were “reprehensible”.

World animal protection called on the provincial government to grab the Belugas and say that “leadership must show and ensure that these animals get the best possible care”.
