Auto plows to Vancouver Street Fair and kills people

A driver plowed into a group of partygoers who attended a Filipinian street festival on Saturday evening in the Canadian city of Vancouver and, according to the local authorities, killed at least nine people.

The police of Vancouver said earlier that they were investigating a “Massa -Vlachtofferbalbident” on a Lapu Lapu Day Festival. The police said that they had taken ‘a lonely suspect’ in custody on the spot: the driver, a 30-year-old Vancouver-Man.

“At about 8:14 pm on April 26, a man in a large crowd of people who attended the Lapu Lapu Day Festival near East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street,” said the police of Vancouver in a post on social media. The festival celebrates Datu Lapu-Lapu, a national hero in the Philippines.

“From now on we can confirm that nine people died after a man had driven through a crowd at the LAPU festival last night,” the police said on social media asked on Sunday. “Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by this tragic incident.”

The police of Vancouver said in an e -mail Sunday that researchers had excluded terrorism as a motive, but did not offer any further details.

In a press conference, Steve Rai, the interim police chef, did not respond to a possible motive for the incident, but said that the driver was known for the police. Members of the crowd had subjected the man before the police arrived, the police said.

The fatal incident took place less than 48 hours before the federal elections take place in Canada. When asked by reporters whether the incident was related to the elections, Mr. Rai said, “I don’t know anything about it.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada said in a social media post that he “was destroyed about the horrible events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier tonight.”

“I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community and to everyone in Vancouver,” he said. “We are all sad for you.”

Mayor of Vancouver, Ken Sim, said He was “shocked and deeply saddened by the horrible incident.”

Lapu-Lapu Day is an annual celebration in the Philippines, which marks the memory of Datu Lapu-Lapu, which stood up against Spanish colonization. The festival was officially founded in Vancouver in 2023.
