Kim and Ye were previously married for seven years Kim has filed for divorce in 2021. They have four children together: daughters North, 12, and Chicago, 7, and sons Saint, 9, and Psalm, 6.
Kim said: ‘It’s not easy. I mean, I raise the kids full time. They live with me.’
Although it is difficult, Kim said she encourages a strong relationship between Ye and their children. “I welcome a great, healthy relationship with my children and their father,” she shared, “and I think he knows that. I strive for it all the time, but I also protect them when the time comes. And it comes in waves and phases and it’s a lot of work.”
Kim explained that her approach to co-parenting comes from the close relationship she had with her own father and what she sees between Tristan Thompson and his and Khloé Kardashian’s two children. “I have the best memories and the best relationship, you know, with my dad,” she said. “And even if I love that, I see Tristan, you know, putting their kids to bed every night and taking them to school every day when he’s not very old. So I just welcome healthy relationships, but it’s not easy.”
When asked when their children last saw Ye, Kim replied, “Every time he calls them and asks. It’s probably been a few months since we’ve heard from him.”
According to Kim, part of the challenge is that Ye lives in multiple countries, while she and the kids live in LA. She said, “They always knew that he had a big life of traveling before and was always on tour and stuff, so that’s the way it is, you know, and that he lives in different countries all the time and likes to live everywhere. So you know, we manage it very well. They love their life, their routine and their schedule. And I think their job as a mother is to make sure that they stick to their routine and that they’re healthy and happy.”
But Kim made it clear that she is not deliberately ‘keeping’ their children from Ye – a claim that he made several times publicly.
“I’ve never done that before,” she stated. “So many times I’ve thought, ‘Oh, I just want to show all these texts. What are you talking about?’ Haven’t heard yet? I begged them, you know, to hang out or stuff like that. It’s more of a story that says, I think it’s all good and we’re living our lives, and then I just wake up and there’s all these tweets about how I kidnapped the kids and I’m like, it’s not a kidnapping, it’s a divorce. You know, we can all still be in each other’s lives and have group dinners. I mean, I just grew up so differently seeing my family co-parent so great. And I see it with Khloé and Tristan, and I just see very healthy relationships.”
Elsewhere, Kim also reflected on the breakdown of her marriage to Ye, who she started dating in 2012. When asked if there was the final straw, Kim said there wasn’t just one moment – but rather “a lot of things that [she] things she wouldn’t deal with,” including talking negatively about her family and broadcasting personal matters online.
“I just don’t feel safe, you know, even physically, like maybe emotionally or even, you know, financially,” she explained. “I would like to come home, and we had five Lamborghinis, and I would come home and they would all be gone if he was in an episode. And I would be like, ‘Oh, wait. Where are all our cars? Like my new car?’ And it would be like, oh, he gave them away to all his friends.”
Kim said she would have “done anything to make it work,” but ultimately Ye was unwilling to “make changes” that she felt would have been “super healthy and beneficial” to their marriage.
“It makes it very difficult to continue in a relationship that can be toxic,” she said. “When you have kids, it’s definitely harder to leave than it is to stay. And it changes everyone’s lives forever.”
“Once my mental health is compromised and I can’t parent the way I need to, and I can’t be present and focused, then there has to be one of us who can,” she continued. “And I had to save myself to be a better mother to everyone. And I think when everyone is older, they will all be able to understand and see it.”
