A year ago, today Intel and AMD have joined forces to defend x86 processorsestablishing an advisory group called the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group (EAG). Its purpose is to simplify, improve compatibility and expand the capabilities of the x86 platform. Now, exactly one year later, AMD and Intel are sharing with us the fruits of this perhaps special collaboration.
These fruits, proposed by AMDit sounds a bit elvish to my tired eyes, but the general gist seems to be that there are four big improvements in the form of new standards for upcoming Intel and AMD chips. These four areas are Advanced Matrix Extension (ACE), AVX10, Elastic Return and Event Delivery (FRED) and ChkTag development.
The latter two should improve CPU interrupt security and performance, as well as memory security. The last point is particularly important because Arm already has memory tags for memory security, so ChkTag will be x86 catching up in this regard.
AVX10 will be the latest iteration of the x86 platform’s AVX SIMD instructions, which should improve vector performance. Then there’s ACE, which AMD says: “When accepted and deployed across the stack, ACE standardizes matrix multiplication capabilities, enabling developers to work seamlessly across devices, from laptops to data center servers.”
Processor die math is more geared towards scientific and AI applications, so ACE should help companies focus even more on these issues in…sigh— the era of artificial intelligence.
If progress continues in these areas, x86 should be able to continue the fight against Arm – which is apparently at least one of the advisory group’s main goals. Arm has barely overtaken the desktop market from Intel and AMD, but the fact that Apple and Qualcomm use Arm-based chips rather than x86 is no small matter.
I suppose that’s especially true for Intel, given how the last few years have gone for America’s chip darling. The improved x86 warranty should give customers more reasons to invest in Intel and/or AMD processors. One more year then.
