Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer refused to explain why he has refused to endorse so far ZOHRAN MAMDANIThat the former Gov. Andrew Cuomo Klekend beat to become the Democratic candidate for the mayor of New York City.
“I know him. We had a good relationship in the past. And we had a good meeting two weeks ago, a very long meeting with many serious questions,” Schumer said Sunday at CNN’s Union. “Everything I can tell you is, I keep talking to him.”
“What is the holdup?” Anchor Dana Bash asked the senator.
“I had to keep talking to him, and that’s what I’m going to do,” Schumer said, and refused to say something more. That is Schumer’s walking line in recent weeks when it comes to Mamdani.
With the elections a little more than a month away, the two highest rankings in the Congress – Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries – have not yet declared public support for the candidate of their party for the mayor of the largest city in America. However, Jeffries is reportedly in discussions to make public approval.
“Both Hakeem and I have conversations with Mamdani and [adviser] Patrick Gaspard about a possible approval, “Rev. Al Sharpton told The New York Post On Sunday.
“I will soon have more to say about the mayor’s race,” Jeffries said on Saturday at the MSNBC show of Sharpton.
Last week Mamdani earned important notes from New York Democrats Gov. Kathy Hochul and speaker Carl Heastie. But Schumer seems to persist, despite his private meeting with Mamdani earlier this month.
If it is chosen, Mamdani would be the first Muslim mayor of the city, and it could be his criticism of Israel who explains at least part of the hesitation of Schumer. But his refusal to endorse a charismatic candidate who has earned broad support from the voters of New York City at a time when the party that needs popular support has many questions and criticizes Schumer’s decision. A New York Times/Siena College Poll Released on Tuesday, Mamdani puts firmly in the lead over his opponents, Cuomo and sitting mayor Eric Adams, who split the rest of the voices.
Other prominent Democrats have called on Schumer and their party brothers to make approval. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez encouraged her fellow democrats to “put our differences aside” and to support Mamdani “for the welfare of the party.”
Schumer’s political calculus may try to balance his home state policy with his role as a democratic leader of the Senate, who tries to recapture his party in 2026 with races in states where Mamdani, a democratic socialist, can be seen as too far left.
The Mamdani campaign is located in simple daily problems that many New Yorkers stand for. He wants to freeze rental prices and offer free bus transit and childcare.
Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent one who will end up with the Democrats and who endorsed Mamdani in June, said on CNN that it was “absurd” and “pretty crazy things” that neither Schumer nor Jeffries had still approved the Mayoral candidate.
When asked if he believed that their lack of approval was due to fear, Sanders said it was probably the influence of their donor base that stopped them. The richest inhabitants of the city apparently have a ‘freakout’, The New York Times reported, about a potential Mamdani victory. Mamdani has promised Tax levies on millionaires And said in June, “I don’t think we should have billionaires.”
“I think money speaks,” said Sanders, according to the Time.
