Blue Jays earn 45th comeback -victory of the year

Toronto-five times there has been magic in the Toronto Blue Jays Dugout.

The sacrifice of Alejandro Kirk in the ninth inning completed another Blue Jays Comeback when Toronto surprised the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 on Saturday. The Blue Jays scored three in the ninth inning for their 45th comeback victory of the season, most in Major League Baseball.

It is the fourth most of the victories in the franchise history behind 1987 (50), 1983 (47) and 1984 (46). Saturday’s rally exceeded the 44 comebacks that were collected by Toronto’s final 1993 World Series Championship team.

“The energy, it is incredible in the dugout, especially in such moments,” said Kirk through translator Hector LeBron. “Everyone who just pays attention to every single, every pitch. Everyone is supportive there. It is incredible.

“That is one of the things that I really believe it helps us to win games.”

Addison Barger distracted the fifth with a home run when Toronto (86-62) chased the Orioles 2-0. Kirk and fellow pinch-hitter Joey Loperfido had RBI singles in the eighth and ninth innings in respectively to keep the Blue Jays within a run.

Light-hitting Andres Gimenez then ticked a single to score Ernie Clement and bind the game 4-4. George Springer took a walk in the next battle to release the bases with one.

Kirk connected to a 95.5 km / h zinc shed, the second throw he saw from Baltimore Reliever Yennier Cano, 321 feet out to the middle and gave the Loperfido time to score the third for the ninth Walk-off victory of the Toronto season.

“I was excited, I was ready for the battle, I tried to make good contact on the ball,” said Kirk. “Knowing that even if I have not made contact, I have (All-Star First Honkman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.) in that line-up behind me.”

The Blue Jays expanded their wins to three games while trying to conquer a berth after the season and then sew the American League East Pennant. Toronto currently has the best record in the Al and brings them into a position to get a bye in the first round of the play -offs.

Manager John Schneider said that Toronto’s tendency for late comebacks can be difficult to watch, but exciting.

“I think it just says a lot about the character of the boys in the clubhouse, it will be a bit contagious,” said Schneider. “The attack late, man, it’s not great for my heart, it’s not great on my ticker, but it’s great to see unfolding.”

Max Scherzer went five innings for the Blue Jays and got two runs on four hits and threw five. Tommy Nance, Eric Lauer, Seranthony Dominguez and Braydon Fisher followed Scherzer to the hill. Fisher took the victory to improve to 6-0.

Scherzer threw 91 thrugs in the outing and he said that it was part of an agreed plan with Schneider to try to rest the 41-year-old Surefire Hall of Famer before the late season.

“We talked about how to manage it, so that we are really good for the next two to go into the play -offs,” said Scherzer. “That is exactly where we think and how we manage it.”

The leading Milwaukee Bewers became the first team to conquer a play-off berth later on Saturday. The victory of Toronto helped to stay three games for the Yankees in the American League East after New York defeated the Boston Red Sox with 5-3 in Fenway Park.

With the loss to 5 1/2 games, Boston left behind the Blue Jays.
