Toronto – Pitcher Eric Lauer has done a bit of everything for the Toronto Blue Jays since his season debut seven weeks ago.
The 30-year-old left-handed person has worked in short relief, served in a bulb and is now used as a spot starter.
He has received results with every step.
Lauer was in top form on Wednesday evening, making one earned run over more than five innings in an 8-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Rogers Center.
“He has been really damn good,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
Lauer (3-1) had a season-high eight strikeouts and allowed four hits and a walk. During his last five performances, he gave up three earned runs for 19 innings and kept opponents as an average of .136.
He credit Fastball Command for his solid performance this season.
“Accelerating boys, they slowed down, moving them in and up and down – that is throwing for me,” said Lauer. “For me I am a pitcher. I have never been an overwhelming man. I have never just been a thing of things. I am not going to surpass people.

“But I think I can let my pitches play better than they are actually based on how I can throw my fastball.”

Bo Bichette hit a lead-off Homer from Eduardo Rodriguez (2-4) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Reed three points for the Blue Jays (40-33), which will go a three-game Sweep on Thursday afternoon.
Bichette and Addison Barger had three hits each, while Guerrero reached base five times. He had a single, double and three walks.
Toronto has won 11 of the last 12 home games and achieved 14 victories in the last 19 games in general.
Lauer threw five shutout frames before he was drawn after he had given up a leadoff triple in the sixth to Corbin Carroll.
With Yariel Rodriguez in Relief, Carroll scored the only run for Arizona (36-37) on a groundout by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
Toronto answered three runs in the bottom half of the inning and broke the game open with a three-run seventh. The Blue Jays improved to 15-8 in Interleague play.
Lauer has made four starts this season in a rotation anchored by veteran-judge Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios and Chris Bassitt.
Max Scherzer made only one start due to a thumb problem and Bowden Francis was usually not effective before he landed on the IL this week due to a shoulder impact.
Lauer has admirably filled in when needed and has probably delivered a temporary place in the five-man mix.
“Your depth will be tested in the course of the year,” said Schneider. “So to let a man like him stepped.”
A first round pick (no. 25 general) from San Diego in 2016, Lauer made his debut with Big League with the Padres in 2018.
He later spent parts of four seasons with the Milwaukee Bewers before he split between Triple-A and the Korean competition last year.
Lauer signed a Minor League deal with the Blue Jays last December and his contract was selected from Triple-A Buffalo on April 30.
Since then he has placed an impressive average of 2.29 earned run for 10 performances with 36 strikeouts against just 11 walks.
“Your best skill is availability,” said Lauer. “So I just try to go outside and do my work every time I get called.”
