New Turkiye Peace Deal will see PKK Kurdish militant group Disken

The Horsepower Kurdish militant group announced on Monday that it will dissolve and disarm as part of a new peace initiative with TurkeyEnding four decades of armed conflict.

The decision of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, who promises to put an end to one of the longest insurance policies and could have a significant impact in Turkiye, Syria and Iraq, was announced by the Firat News Agency, a media outlet close to the group. It comes days after the PKK had convened a party congress in Noord -Irak.

In February, PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has been locked up on an island near Istanbul since 1999, encouraged his group to congress a congress and formally decide to dissolve.

The call from Ocalan, 76, which still has a significant influence on the Kurdish movement despite his 25-year prison sentence, meant a crucial step towards the end of the decades of conflict that has been claiming tens of thousands of lives since the 1980s.

Building at the Momentum, the PKK announced a unilateral on 1 March -the fires, but attached conditions, including the establishment of a legal framework for peace negotiations.

The conflict between Turkiye and the PKK has been transferred to North Iraq and North Syria, with Turkiye performing countless raids in the adjacent regions. The PKK is mentioned as a terror group by Turkiye and its Western allies.

In a statement by Firat News, the PKK announced a decision to put an end to its ‘organizational structure’, which suggests that the armed struggle has successfully disputed the policy that wanted to suppress Kurdish rights.

The congress assessed that the struggle of the PKK “had brought the Kurdish issue to the point of resolution by democratic politics, which completed the historical mission,” said the statement.

“As a result, activities were carried out under the name ‘PKK’ formally terminated,” said the statement.

The government party of Turkiye welcomed the announcement “as an important step towards the purpose of a terror -free turkey.”

“If terrorism is completely eradicated, it will open the door to a new era,” wrote Omer Celik, spokesperson for President Recep Erdogan, on the X Social Media Platform.

Turkiye officially changed its internationally recognized name in 2022, but the spellings of Turkey and Turkiye remain common because that change is being implemented.

Celik, however, said that the decision must apply to all “PKK locations, affiliated companies and illegal structures.” He did not go out, but the explanation seemed to refer to Kurdish hunters in Syria, who have ties with the PKK and have been involved in intense fights with Turkish-supported forces on the ground there.

Previous peace efforts between Turkiye and the group – most recently in 2015 – ended in failure.

Dozens of people gathered on Monday outside a mosque in the mainly Kurdse city of Diyarbakir, in which the announcement was celebrated with a traditional Kurdish dance.

In recent years, the PKK is limited to isolated attacks in Turkiye, because the Turkish army, supported by armed drones, has increasingly pushed over the mountainous border to Iraq.

The newest peace initiative was launched in October by the coalition partner of Erdogan, Devlet Bahceli, an extreme right -wing politician who suggested that Ocalan could get conditional release if his group does violence and dissolution.

Some believe that the main objective of the reconciliation effort is that the Government of Erdogan gets Kurdish support for a new constitution that would enable him to stay in power after 2028 when his term of office ends.

Bahceli has openly called for a new constitution and says that it is essential for the future of Turkiye that Erdogan remains in power. Erdogan and Bahceli are reportedly looking for parliamentary support of the pro-Kurdish People’s Equality and Democracy Party, or DEM.

The PKK statement could mean a big profit for Erdogan, whose government struggles with political tensions after the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu on accusation of corruption. Many see the captivity of the mayor, who is the strongest challenger of the opposition of Erdogan’s more than two decades rule, as politically motivated. The government insists that the judiciary of Turkiye is independently active.

Sinan Ulgen, director of the Istanbul -based Edam Think Tank, quoted both domestic and international drivers for the new peace initiative.

“The domestic driver can be explained by Erdogan’s aim to get extra support in parliament to paves the way to his potential candidacy for the next round of presidential election,” said Ulgen.

Internationally, Ulgen said, factors such as the change of administration in Syria and the weakening of Iran after the target of Israel had left the PKK “more vulnerable than in the past”.

“This does not mean that the road is free from all obstacles,” Ulgen added, warning for possible splits within the PKK.

“We have seen this kind of dynamic all over the world,” said Ulgen. “Whether it is IRA or other entities that have decided to lay down weapons, there is the prospect of a split, where one wing is in accordance with the goal, but the more radical wing that continues with the fight.”
