Israel will mobilize thousands of reserve soldiers to strengthen his campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the army announced on Saturday evening, while the country seemed ready to expand his offensive in the Palestinian enclave.
The call-up suggested that the Israeli government was preparing to shift tactics in an attempt to agree to Hamas to agree to its conditions for an end to the war. It is unclear whether that would be successful, because Hamas fought a determined rebellion due to more than a year of Israeli operations in Gaza.
The Safety Cabinet of Israel, chaired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, would meet on Sunday to formally sign up when broadening the campaign in Gaza, said an Israeli official, who spoke, provided anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
The mobilization announcement worsened fears in Gaza, where Israel has excluded food, medicines and other humanitarian aid to come in for more than two months. Many are still displacing of more than a year of hunger and fighting or live in the midst of the rubble of their houses.
After Israel had ended a two-month ceasefires with Hamas in mid-March, Israeli troops resume attacks on the enclave. But while Israel -Jets and Drones Gaza regularly bombed out of the blue, Israeli ground troops delayed their advance after they had grabbed some territory.
According to Gaza Health civil servants, more than 50,000 people were killed in the military campaign of Israel against Hamas in Gaza. They make no distinction between fighters and citizens, but their size include thousands of children.
The war started after Hamas led a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which around 1,200 people were killed and about 250 was brought back to Gaza as hostages. In the aftermath, Israeli leaders promised to destroy Hamas in Gaza and free all the prisoners who were held there.
Despite more than a year of devastating war, Israel has to reach one of those goals completely. Although Israel succeeded in killing many of the leaders of Hamas, the Palestinian militants have fought a stubborn exhaustion war, recruited new hunters for their case and are supposed to still have 24 living hostages and the bodies of dozens of others.
Earlier in the war, Israeli troops wiped through the enclave, in which they leveled parts of the cities of Gaza and developed hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. But they often returned to different areas, again and again, to confront with what they called a renewed Hamas.
International mediators, including the Trump government, have tried to notice a new cease-fire between Israel and Hamas to free hostages in exchange for Palestinians in Israeli prisons. But the two parties have set apparently conflicting conditions for a deal.
Israel has demanded that Hamas laid its arms, which the group refused to do. For his part, Hamas has said that it will no longer release the hostages until Israel connects to an agreement with a complete end of the war and a full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
The call-up announcement also led to deeper fear among the families of the hostages, who fear that the fighting could kill their loved ones. They have tried to collect Israelis to put pressure on the government to achieve a new ceasefire with Hamas.
Yotam Cohen, whose brother was abducted during the attack-led attack, accused Mr Netanyahu of breaking the previous ceasefire before the country led to a renewed, avoidable war with Hamas. He called for an immediate deal with Hamas to free his brother, who is still supposed to be alive.
“Instead of bringing him home in an agreement, Netanyahu sends soldiers to a war that will kill him,” Mr. Cohen said During a rally on Saturday.
Mr Netanyahu has suggested that the remaining hostages are less important than to beat Hamas. In interviews and speeches, Mr Netanyahu promised the Israeli public ‘absolute victory’ over the group.
Freeing the prisoners was “an important goal,” Mr Netanyahu said in an address on Thursday. “But in war there is a supreme goal, and that is beating our enemies,” he added.
The army of Israel leans heavily on the pole of reservists, many of whom have served for months – with some who did several duty trips – since the war began.
But those ranks have seen the dissidence against the behavior of the war by the government. Last month a group of air force reservists and retired officers signed a public letter Encourage a deal with Hamas to return the hostages, even at the price of stopping the war in Gaza.
