The International Astronomers, which used the NASA/ESA Hubble space telescope, has made new measurements of Uranus Rotation rate with a new technique, achieving accuracy 1000 times higher than previous estimates. Analyzing more than a decade of Hubble observation of Uranus Aurorae, researchers have perfected the period of planet rotation and established a key new reference point for future planetary research.

Determining the rotation rate in the interior of the planet is challenging, especially for the world like Uranus, where direct measurements are not possible. A team led by Laurent Lamy (from Lira, Observatoire de Paris-Pari and Lam, Aix-Marseille Univ., France), has developed an innovative method for monitoring the Uranus Aurorae rotary movement: spectacular light generated in Politive energy particles near the magnetic poles of planets.

This technique revealed that Uranus completes full rotation at 5 pm, 14 minutes and 52 seconds – 28 seconds longer than the estimated NASA -in Voyager 2 assessment during its 1986 Flyby. The research is published in the magazine Astronomy of nature.

“Our measurement not only gives an important reference for The community, but also resolves the long -standing question: previous coordinate systems based on outdated rotational periods have quickly become incorrect, which is impossible to monitor uranian magnetic columns over time, “explains Lamy.” With this new length system, we can now compare auroral observations that extend for almost 40 years and even a plan for the upcoming Mission of the Create. “

This breakthrough is enabled thanks to Hubble’s long -term Uranus surveillance. Over the decade, Hubble has regularly observed its ultraviolet auroral shows, allowing researchers to accompany the position of magnetic columns with the magnetic field models.

“The continuous observations of Hubble were crucial,” Lamy says. “Without this wealth of data, it would be impossible to discover a periodic signal with the level of accuracy we have achieved.”

Unlike Aurora land, Jupiter or Saturn, Uranus Aurore behaves in a unique and unpredictable way. This is due to the highly inclined magnetic field of the planet, which is significantly compensated for from its rotational axis. Findings not only help astronomers to understand the uranial magnetosphere, but also provide vital information for future missions.

The decadal research of planetary sciences in the US is a priority priority concept of orbiters and tests for future research.

These findings set a stage for further studies that will deepen our understanding of one of the most mysterious planets in the solar system. With its ability to control Over the decades, the Hubble space telescope is still a necessary tool for planetary science, running the way for the next era of research in Uranus.
