IF You are not familiar with Minecraft as a game, then this film will not necessarily resolve a large screen version of the same thing. Minecraft, even more than most computer games, is what you make of it, an experience generated by the player. So in a sense, the idea is to make a film in the Minecraft world counter -intuitively, because it can never replicate what is good about Minecraft, it can only tell you what is good about Minecraft. In addition, this comedy fantasy takes aspects of the Minecraft world and uses them as building blocks in a rolling adventure that is suitable for almost all ages, so that Jack Black and Jason Momo Carte blanche to wild out and deep crazy. Your affection for and/or tolerance of this last prospect will largely dictate your pleasure of this film.
Black plays Steve, a Crafter who was the original standard player in the game, although that does not matter here. Momoa is Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, a washed -up video champion with an aesthetics permanent and delicious in the 1980s: pink leather -lined jacket and lush locks that flowed past his wonderful shoulders, such as the first snow melt of a mountain chain. Because this is a bit of an ensemble film, we also have Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) who complete the Good Guys team. It is not the fault of one of the last three actors, but it is difficult for them to impress besides Black and Momoa who are completely-and it would be a tiring experience if they tried it. That means that their storylines feel like downtime, an opportunity to relax and catch their breath, instead of offering the emotional core that the writers were probably intended.
Used more sparingly, but also shooting all cylinders is hilarious – and when isn’t it? -Jennifer Coolidge, whose teacher character exactly the kind of breathable over-Sharer is that Coolidge has made its specialty. She tells Henry, a child under her care, immediately that she put it in a dead marriage for 20 years because of ‘the dogs’. Coolidge is simply a genius in this and can put this stuff in her sleep, without the least suggestion of effort.
Black is a very different type of performer; You can see efforts in every tic and line delivery of the rotating eyes, but that is the whole point: it is funny (usually) to see that someone is so heartily committed to that bit. It is a pity that the film as a whole does not work as well as its striking versions, with the tendency to ping pong of scraping to scrape with little sense that it makes a lot of difference if you would rearrange the different sample attacks or obstacles in a different order. A little more craftsmanship could have elevated this to something special a la Dungeons and Dragons from 2023But it is a pleasant and hectic experience.
