Sir Keir Starmer will not be “derailed” in working to end the war in Ukraine after the US had paused military aid to the country, the Deputy Prime Minister said.
Angela Rayner said that the prime minister “laser was aimed at getting peace” and would continue with “dialogue” with both President Donald Trump and Europe.
She said that this was “a very serious moment” in the war and emphasized the VK, together with its European allies, aimed at supporting Ukraine.
The US president made the decision to freeze the American military support for Ukraine on Monday, after a meeting with members of his top team.
The US is by far the largest individual donor of military help to Ukraine and offers weapons, equipment and financial support.
Between the beginning of 2022 and the end of 2024 it gave $ 69 billion (£ 54.6 billion) to military aid, according to the German think tank the Kiel Institute.
The decision came hours after Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zenskyy because he said that the end of the war with Russia is “very, very far away”.
The couple had an explosive spit in the Oval Office last Friday, where Zensky left the White House before a proposed deal about sharing Ukrainian minerals with American companies could be signed.
On Monday, the White House announced that it “revised” the delivery of ammunition and other equipment to Ukraine to “ensure that it contributes to a solution”.
The order to pause all current American military aid to Ukraine immediately comes into effect and includes all American military equipment that is currently not in Ukraine, including weapons in transport and at depots in Poland.
The break will affect more than $ 1 billion (£ 790 million) in weapons and ammunition, including rockets, anti-tank weapons and armored vehicles of the kind that Ukraine has familiarized in his efforts to ward off Russian troops.
The break in the aid will sign more pressure on Zensky de Minerals deal and agree to peace talks without the American security guarantees he has searched.
In an interview with Fox News, Vice-President JD Vance said that the door was open to Ukraine to return to the negotiations such as Zensky “was willing to talk seriously about peace.”
‘Deep disturbing’
Responding to the decision, Rayner told the BBC that the Trump government wanted Europe to rise and was clear about its intentions to end the war in Ukraine.
Rayner said that the prime minister was also “laser -oriented on getting peace”.
“He will not derail by announcements,” Rayner told Radio 4’s Today program.
“He will continue that dialogue with our oldest and strongest ally, the US, and with European partners and with Ukraine.”
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said that the UK and Europe should “be driven faster after the American announcement.”
She said, “The news at night that America stops military help to Ukraine is deeply disturbing.”
Reform of the British leader Nigel Farage said that the break between the US and Ukraine the Russian President Vladimir Putin only helped.
He posted: “I hope that Keir Starmer can use his new role to bring the two together and quickly.”
Last week Sir met Keir Trump in the White House, when the prime minister tried to form the American approach to end the war in Ukraine.
During the weekend, Sir Keir organized a top of Western leaders, while participating in shaping peace negotiations and making it smooth from broken relationships between Trump and Zensky.
The UK and France play a leading role and have both committed themselves to send soldiers to Ukraine, under one proposal.
But apart from increasing the expenditure for defense, there seems to be no consensus about a plan to end the war among European leaders.
On Tuesday, President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission presented a five -part plan to mobilize around € 800 billion (£ 660 million) for the defense of Europe and to offer “direct” military support for Ukraine.
“This is a moment for Europe, and we are ready to perform,” said Von der Leyen.
A spokesperson for the British government said: “We remain absolutely committed to securing a permanent peace in Ukraine and are working on important allies to support this effort.
“It’s the right thing to do and is in our interest in doing this.”
