The Prime Minister of Great Britain Sir Keir Starmer received Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the stairs of Downing Street, when he began to try to strengthen the Ukrainian president after an explosive meeting with Donald Trump.
Starmer talked by phone with Trump and Zelenskyy after Friday’s breakdown in an oval office and called them to resume conversations, including finalizing the contract, to enable the US to divide some of Ukraine’s mineral wealth, according to those informed about conversations.
On Saturday, Starmer publicly showed the support of Zelenskyy, which was welcomed by cheering society members when he came to Downing Street, telling him that he had “full support” of Great Britain.
“You heard people from Great Britain go out to show how much they support you and that we are absolutely determined to stand with you,” said Starmer from private conversations.
The reception of Zelenskyy at Downing Street was in a clear contrast with his hostile meeting with Trump the day before in the White House. The President of Ukraine, who would meet King Karol on Sunday, told Starmer that “we are counting on your support.”
On Sunday, Starmer will host 14 European leaders in London to gather military and financial support for Ukraine, including providing help in providing peace with Russia.
According to European diplomats, the British Prime Minister, who has already offered to put British soldiers in Ukraine, hopes that several other European nations will follow in their footsteps.
Starmer impresses Zelenskyy during the Saturday meeting that he must first patch relations with Trump and that any room will not last, unless it is guaranteed by the US, said British officials.
“The prime minister’s priority is to do everything you need to defend Ukraine,” said one of Starmer’s ally. “This means that the US must be involved. You must fix this relationship and return to the mineral agreement. “
France also offered soldiers to help ensure peace in Ukraine; Starmer and President of France Emmanuel Macron will benefit from a Sunday meeting to revive a more muscular European reaction.
One of the British officials suggested that it was time for other European leaders to put money where their lips were: “What Ukraine needs now is weapons and butter. He doesn’t need tweeting people and virtue signaling. “
Starmer wants Europe to put Ukraine in a strong position for talks with Russia – including the armament of Kijasz and sanctions for hardening against Moscow – and develop a real plan to secure all peace agreements.
The British prime minister conducted warm conversations with Trump in the White House on Thursday-Thursday, 24 hours before Zelenskyy, he clashed with the furious president of the USA and vice president of JD Vance.
British officials do not believe that Starmer’s efforts were vain or that he was played in any way by the US President. One said: “Our relations with the president are better than at the beginning of the week and this is important.
“What happened to Zelenskyy in an oval office does it even more important than ever that the prime minister and Macron went to the White House.
“Ukraine needs weapons, food, long -term peace and safety guarantees. And for this they need the United States. People can tweet everything they like, but there is no other plan. “
Another British official said: “The prime minister will gather people and make sure that there is only one negotiations in the city – and this is President Trump.”
Downing Street is expecting participants of the Sunday summit, they include Olaf Scholz from Germany, Giorgia Melons from Italy and Donald Tusk from Poland, as well as Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission and Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General.
The peak will take place at Lancaster House, a nineteenth -century residence near the Buckingham Palace in Centrum London. Starmer will also organize connections with the leaders of three Baltic States.
Last week, the French official said that early indications were such that Great Britain and France would probably provide the greatest conditions in every stabilization forces after breaking, but there may be offers of the help of some Baltic States and perhaps Sweden.
Germany and Poland, which support Ukraine, belong to countries that have not yet offered to send soldiers to a war -affected country to help provide all peace agreements.
