More than 100 of the most renowned athletes of Great Britain have written an open letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer in which the government is encouraged to support London’s offer to organize the World Athletics Championships 2029.
Sir Mo Farah, Keely Hodgkinson, Dame Kelly Holmes, Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Daley Thompson belong to the athletes, past and present, to sign the letter.
The bidding proposal, if successful, would see the world championships in London Stadium and require a “one -off injection of public financing in 2028” with the promise of “£ 400 million in a national economic impact”.
“Hosting in 2029 would bring the world’s best athletes back to British soil, but more importantly, it would inspire a new generation to get involved in the most diverse and inclusive sport there is,” the letter said.
“Some of us were lucky to experience a home crowd in London 2012 and 2017. Some of us signed up, others were in the stands. We were all inspired.
“That Vonk has put many of us on our travels, just as it did for so many thousands of other young people who have joined, coach, officer or just fall in love with athletics.”
The 2029 bidding process starts this summer, whereby organizers encourage the ministers to bind to securing the world championships for the UK in the coming weeks.
London also organized the championships when they were last held in the UK in 2017.
