ESPN’s Bracketology -efforts are aimed at projecting the NCAA Tournament Field, just as we expect that the NCAA Division I Basketball Committee will select the field in March. ESPN bracketologist Charlie Creme uses the same data points that prefer the committee, including the strength of the schedule and other seasonal hose indicators, including the network and team hot data that is comparable to what is available for the NCAA, in his projections of the field. 64 Team Beugel

The bracket of 64 teams is the standard version of the NCAA tournament field that has been in force since 1994. However, if the 2021 field consists of 64 teams, there will be some important differences for recent years.

The primary adjustment of a normal year is of course playing the entire NCAA tournament on a single site. This eliminates the need for geographical considerations when sowing. Moreover, there will be at least one automatic qualification match this season, because the decision of the Ivy League to abandon the 2020-21 season reduces the number of AQ entries for 31 for this season.

48 Team Beugel

In this projection, a condensed selection process would reduce the field by eight large teams and eight automatic qualifications (the latter of which still receives an income unit). The top four seeds in each region would receive a Bye in the second round, with four first round races per region – 5 versus 12, 6 versus 11, 7 versus 10 and 8 versus 9.

Bracket of 16 teams

In this projection, the committee selects the 16 best available teams. There are no automatic qualifications, although all non-competitive conference champions receive the designated income unit.

To maintain any sense of national balance, the participation of the conference is tucked off in four teams. And no region may have more than one team from the same conference.
